IT ALL STARTED WITH THE ULTIMATE BOX ON WHEELS
For Adam, the Jeep Wrangler YJ wasn’t just a 4×4; it was the blueprint of automotive purity. It was exactly how a kid would draw a car: a massive bonnet, oversized wheels and tyres, no roof, absolutely no full doors, and a simple, exposed roll cage. It was rugged, honest, and delightfully simple.
So, Adam went looking for one.
The YJ he eventually tracked down came with a bizarre bit of British pop-culture history: it was originally owned from new by none other than boxing legend Chris Eubank. If you look closely at Louis Theroux’s When Louis Met… Chris Eubank documentary from March 2002, you can actually see it. It was a stunner—deep black exterior paint contrasting beautifully with a classic, rich Spice interior.
It had almost everything Adam wanted. Almost.
“But the one thing missing which finishes a YJ is a set of Half doors.”
The Half-Door Gamble
In the UK, finding a set of factory Jeep half-doors is like searching for hens’ teeth. They simply didn’t exist on the market. If you did manage to track down a rare lead online, it was a massive gamble—you were expected to drop serious cash blindly on something you couldn’t see in person beforehand.
The only other option was looking across the Atlantic. But sourcing a set from the US meant playing a completely different, frustrating financial game:
- Silly money spent on international freight for oversized parts.
- Eye-watering import taxes and unexpected customs fees at the UK border.
- The ultimate disappointment: After all that waiting and paying through the nose, what actually arrived was deeply underwhelming. These were 30-year-old parts, after all. You were paying premium prices for brittle plastics and tired old steel.
Across the UK, a passionate community of CJ7, YJ, and TJ owners were hitting the exact same brick wall. Everyone wanted that iconic, open-air half-door look for their cherished rigs, but the logistical nightmare and extortionate costs of getting them to the UK made it nearly impossible.
It was time to evolve the game. If you couldn’t get them, you’d have to build them.
Evolving the Game
Adam decided to bypass the US market entirely and build something completely new from the ground up. The goal wasn’t just to replicate the elusive factory doors, but to totally reinvent them using modern engineering.
He envisioned a premium, British-built aluminium half-door that didn’t require a shipping container or a customs broker to own.
The new design focused on ultimate customisation and modern utility—giving Jeepers features the original 90s doors could only dream of:
- High-Grade Aluminium Construction: Incredibly strong, lightweight, and manufactured right here without the import headache.
- Modern, Replaceable Mechanics: No more hunting for obsolete 30-year-old latch parts. These featured easy-to-swap-out, modern internal mechanics.
- Integrated Storage: Smartly utilising the door’s internal cavity to give drivers functional storage space for trail gear.
- Aluminium Door Cards: A blank canvas. Owners could leave them raw, spray-colour-code them to match their seats, or hand them over to an upholsterer for a bespoke finish.
- Titanium Hardware: Because everyone loves detail in the Jeep world. Fancy titanium bolts offered the perfect premium touch to tie the doors into the existing interior or exterior style.
Renata Machina Goes Global
What started as a personal quest to bypass a broken supply chain and fix a missing piece on a black YJ quickly manifested into a much grander vision. This wasn’t just about making a single part anymore; it was about creating a new standard of high-end components to help people rebuild and elevate their machines.
A vision of a machine, reborn. Adam looked to Latin to christen the venture, landing on the perfect translation for his philosophy: Renata Machina (Reborn Machine).
The US import gamble was over for the UK, but the demand didn’t stop at the water’s edge. Word spread quickly across the English Channel, and Renata Machina soon expanded to serve passionate Jeep owners right across continental Europe, who were facing the exact same struggles sourcing parts.
But the ultimate full-circle moment was yet to come.
The dream that was born out of frustration with American importing is now stepping directly onto American soil. By establishing a dedicated manufacturing facility in the US, Renata Machina is bringing US-built, premium aluminium components directly to the American market. It is a proud return to the very roots and birthplace of the Jeep heritage—taking an iconic American silhouette, re-engineering it with modern precision, and building it right back where the legend first began.
REBORN MACHINE ≥ RENATA MACHINA
We challenge the perception of what a Jeep could be. Anything that compromises the ride, aesthetics, stance or function is treated as an opportunity to innovate and improve the design. Jeep owners seek more than just a machine. They are passionate individuals in search of a completely immersive off road experience. Every Renata Machina product is built from an obsession for innovative design, engineering excellence and dedication to the driver.
Our clients are effectively a part of the creative process from the beginning when spec’ing their half doors and through the lifecycle of their product. They are also responsible for defining the future of Renata Machina. From the sketch phase to 3-D modelling, the design team considers which materials to use and how to create the next generation of Renata Machina products.
Let’s take a journey together.
